Emilio Comici Mountain Hut
The Emilio Comici mountain hut is situated at 2,153 metres above sea level, at the foot of the main face of the Sassolungo and near Piz Sella (2,284 m), above the village of Plan de Gralba, a hamlet of Selva di Val Gardena.
History
The refuge is named after Emilio Comici, a renowned mountaineer from Trieste known for his contribution to modern mountaineering. Comici lost his life in 1940 in Vallunga, Selva di Val Gardena. The refuge stands beneath the ‘Sassolungo bell tower’, a gully that Comici explored with Severino Casara to open a new route to the summit of Sassolungo on 28 August 1940, whilst he was mayor of Selva (1938–1940). This route, which includes sections of grades 5 and 6, was named the ‘Via Comici-Casara’.
Features and information
The mountain refuge is open all year round and offers a catering service. It is internationally renowned for its ability to combine an alpine atmosphere with exclusive cuisine, famed for its dishes featuring fresh fish, Mediterranean specialities and wild plants. The menu blends Alpine tradition – with dishes such as Kaiserschmarrn and canederli – with high-altitude seafood dishes, enhanced by local aromatic herbs. Facilities include a spacious panoramic terrace overlooking the Sella Group, an indoor bar, a lounge area and the option to organise private events. The atmosphere is exclusive and very popular, ideal for gourmet lunches or aperitifs after hiking or skiing.
